_{Joni clambered into the taxi, getting an eye full of the pink sparkly number that Sandra had on. It appeared that she had fallen into a bowl of marshmallow mix then rolled in a pot of glitter, but Joni decided that was a little harsh.
Sandra smiled with glee when she saw the red, floaty, one shouldered dress and Sophie, in her tight LBD, looked scornfully at Joni’s patent red boots.
‘I thought you were wearing blue,’ she turned to Sandra, who simpered a little and smoothed out her pink party frock.
‘Oh, I was, but in the end, I couldn’t resist this.’
Joni nodded and stooped down to retie a trailing shoelace.
‘Joni!’ Sandra scorned ‘What happened to the heels? You’ve got a lovely dress on and then those horrible boots.’
Joni smiled – she had to have something to balance out the prettiness. She’d considered her tatty leather biker jacket and her spider web tights but decided that was a little much.
‘You’ve got to dress to impress, girl.’
‘Huh!’ Sophie snorted ‘Impress who? Everyone’s taken unless you want Benjamin or Adrian, and I mean, come on…’
‘Oh shhh, you’ve got to go out as if you’ve got someone to impress – you never know when they might come along.’
‘If I was trying to impress someone, then they wouldn’t be wowed over heels.’
Joni grinned discreetly to herself, looking out the taxi window into the artificially lit street. Sandra smiled politely and Sophie shook her head and raised an eyebrow.
Joni felt quite satisfied, as after all, no man who was impressed by a pair of stilettos was worth her effort.}
